
What Is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, leading to a slowdown of the body’s metabolism.
Symptoms
Symptoms develop gradually and may include:
- Fatigue and sluggishness
- Weight gain
- Cold intolerance
- Dry skin and hair fall
- Constipation
- Depression
- Menstrual irregularities
- Swelling of face and legs
Causes
- Autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis)
- Iodine deficiency
- Thyroid surgery or radiation therapy
- Certain medications
Diagnosis
Thyroid disorders are diagnosed with:
- TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
- Free T4 and Free T3 tests
- Thyroid antibody tests
Treatment
- Lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy (Levothyroxine)
- Regular blood test monitoring
- Dose adjustments as advised by an endocrinologist
